Protests possible across the US through at least early February following public release of Tyre Nichols arrest video.

Warning

Event

Protests are possible across the US through at least early February following the public release of video showing the arrest of Tyre Nichols. Nichols died in a Memphis, Tennessee, hospital Jan. 10 - three days after police stopped and forcibly arrested him. Authorities have stated that video footage of the arrest would be released sometime after 18:00 Jan. 27.

The five officers involved in the incident were subsequently fired for engaging in excessive force, in addition to being arrested and charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression. Nevertheless, the footage may catalyze significant unrest throughout the country, especially in major cities such as Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; Minneapolis, Minnesota; New York, New York; Portland, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; San Francisco, California; and Washington, D.C. Demonstrations are particularly likely near government buildings and police stations, as well as on main thoroughfares.

Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business are likely near related gatherings. Clashes between demonstrators and police are possible; acts of violence and vandalism cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. If major protests occur, confirm appointments in advance, allow additional time to reach destinations, and consider taking alternative routes that circumvent demonstrations. Strictly heed instructions issued by local authorities.
