Argentina: Labor activists from Piquetera Unit to hold national strike Feb. 7; heaviest protests to take place in Buenos Aires

Labor activists from Piquetera Unit to strike across Argentina Feb. 7; tight security, disruptions likely, especially in Buenos Aires.

Warning

Event

Labor activists from the Piquetera Unit (Unidad Piquetera) will hold a strike across the country Feb. 7. The purpose of the action is to protest allegedly low government spending on social and labor programs. Demonstrators are planning particularly heavy protests in Buenos, Aires, with activity focused on Pueyrredon Bridge, La Noria Bridge (Puente de la Noria), the Western Access Route (Acceso Oeste), National Route 3 (Panamerican Highway), and National Route 1. The Piquetero Unit has also planned a blockade for the Viejo Bridge (Puente Viejo) and Tercer Bridge (Puente Tercer) between Neuquen, Nuequen Province, and Cipolletti, Rio Negro Province.

The Piquetera Unit has a history of well-organized, disruptive protests and could rally thousands to tens of thousands in Buenos Aires. Further protests are likely throughout the country, particularly on bridges and roads and in front of government buildings. Business and transport disruptions are likely, particularly in Buenos Aires. While most protests will probably remain peaceful, clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Allow additional transport time to reach destinations near rally venues. Do not attempt to drive through any protester roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them before proceeding. Reconfirm business appointments. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
