DRC: Protests ongoing in Goma Feb. 7; further protests possible in Goma through mid- February /update 1

Protests are ongoing for the second consecutive day in Goma, Feb. 7, to denounce the perceived inaction of the regional force of the Community of East African States (EAC) against the M23 rebel group and demand its withdrawal. Protesters are also asking the government to reclaim areas controlled by the M23. Main roads across the city have reportedly been blocked, and businesses closed amid the protest action.

Further protests in response to M-23 rebel activity in North Kivu Province are possible in Goma through mid-February. Demonstrators have gathered periodically since early February to voice frustration over the alleged inability of local and regional security forces to contain the rebel threat. Protests were reported Feb. 2-4. Additional demonstrations over the issue could take the form of street protests, protest roadblocks, strikes, or a combination of actions. Officials will likely deploy additional police to monitor demonstrations, disperse protesters, or clear roadblocks. Ground travel and business operation disruptions may also occur. Demonstrators could confront security forces or United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) vehicles, personnel, or facilities. Violence during these occurrences is likely.
