Iraq: Protests ongoing in Nasiriyah, Dhi Qar Governorate, Feb. 1

Graduates are protesting in several locations in Nasiriyah, Dhi Qar Governorate, including along the Al-Nasr bridge, as of the morning of Feb. 1. Protesters have reportedly blocked traffic along the bridge with burning debris. The purpose of the action is to demand more employment opportunities.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture in the protest area until the situation stabilizes. Localized transport disruptions are likely through at least late Feb. 1. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse. Further related protests are possible in the coming days.
