N. Macedonia: Authorities to increase security in Skopje through at least Feb. 5 for observance of Goce Delcev’s birth anniversary

Authorities to increase security in Skopje, North Macedonia, through at least Feb. 5 for observance of Goce Delcev’s 151st birthday.

Warning

Event

Authorities will increase security in Skopje through at least Feb. 5 as part of precautions for the observance of 151st anniversary of Goce Delcev's birth. Commemorative events, likely including demonstrations, will take place on Feb. 4 in the vicinity of St. Pas Church in the northeast section of the Old Bazaar. Authorities plan to deploy additional security personnel near the church during the events. As of Feb. 2, police have established temporary security checkpoints and closures on Samoilova Street. Additional officers will likely take up positions near prominent monuments in Skopje's City Park, outside the Parliament building, and Skopje City (Macedonia) Square.

Security checkpoints and road closures will almost certainly prompt localized transport and business disruptions in central Skopje through at least Feb. 5. Clashes between supporters of rival political camps cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Due to the possibility of clashes, avoid any demonstrations that may materialize. Confirm business appointments, road status, and transport reservations through at least Feb. 5. Carry proper identification documents. Heed all instructions from security personnel.
