School bus drivers continue to strike and protest in New Caledonia as of Feb. 7.

Informational

Event

School bus drivers affiliated with the Societe Caledonienne de Transport (SCT, or Caledonian Transport Company) are striking and protesting in New Caledonia as of Feb. 7. On Feb. 6, activists commenced a work stoppage and protested outside the Syndicat Mixte des Transports Urbains du Grand Nouméa (Mixed Union for Urban Transport, SMTU) office in Koutio; the action is to denounce the government's recent reduction in the budget concerning school transport. The strike will likely impact school bus services territorywide.

Any additional demonstrations are likely to occur, especially near SMTU offices, as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Dozens of participants are likely to attend any such gatherings. Localized transport disruptions may occur in the event of a larger turnout.

Advice

Confirm school bus services in advance. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
