Nigeria: Fuel shortages remain possible nationwide as of Feb. 1

As of Jan. 1, fuel shortages remain possible nationwide due to recurrent supply disruptions. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) announced Jan. 27 that the ongoing shortage is aggravated by cross-border smuggler activities as fuel prices in neighboring countries are usually higher than in Nigeria. The scarcity has prompted long queues at available fuel stations in major cities, including Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt, among other affected locations. Price hikes have also been reported at stations nationwide despite regulated prices imposed by the government. The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has warned the scarcity may last until June when the government plans to end fuel subsidies.

Increased demand at available fuel stations remains likely and may prompt congestion on nearby roads. Tense exchanges are possible between drivers. Related protests have been recently reported, including in Benin city Jan. 30, where protesters caused traffic gridlock. Such protests remain increasingly possible, notably if fuel scarcity persists.
