PT: Heightened security likely in Huwara through early March amid concerns for further violence

Increased security likely around Huwara, PT, through early March following Israeli settlers' violent acts against Palestinians, Feb. 26-27.

Warning

Event

Heightened security measures are likely amid concerns for further violence in the Palestinian town of Huwara in Nablus Governorate through early March. Israeli settlers entered Huwara and began attacking Palestinians and setting fires to homes and vehicles Feb. 26. The action came after suspected Palestinian militants killed two Israeli civilians in a shooting attack in Huwara on the same day. Settlers engaged in similar violent activities on Feb. 27, prompting the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to deploy four brigades. Reports indicate that the IDF has asked Palestinian businesses to remain closed for the next few days until order is restored.

Transport and business disruptions are likely in the Huwara over the coming days. Increased Israeli security measures may include imposing movement restrictions or checkpoints, among other protocols. As tensions remain high, further violence between Israeli settlers and Palestinians cannot be ruled out over the coming days and weeks.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in Huwara and its surrounding areas. Refrain from traveling to violence-affected locations until the situation stabilizes; if clashes break out in your area, seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Do not attempt to bypass any security checkpoints without authorities' permission. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and your home government.
