South Sudan: Clashes kill 27 people in Kajo Keji County, Central Equatoria State, Feb. 2

Event

Unidentified assailants attacked Likamerok village in Lire Payam, Kajo Keji County, Central Equatoria State, Feb. 2. The assault left at least 27 people dead. Cattle keepers, suspected to be from the Bor community, attacked and killed 21 farmers and six herders from the Nuer community, in an alleged revenge killing for an attack that occurred two weeks prior. Kajo Keji County is located approximately 155 km (96 miles) south of Juba near the border with Uganda.

Authorities will probably maintain an increased security presence in the area over the coming days. Additional attacks cannot be ruled out; in the event of further violence, officials could impose restrictive security measures, including curfews.

Context

Much of South Sudan, including Kajo Keji County, is prone to cattle rustling and communal clashes. The Bor and Nuer communities, living in the Kajo Keji County area, have regularly clashed with each other over cattle and access to grazing land and water.
