UK: Unionized workers in Scotland plan airport strikes Feb. 17-23

Unionized workers in Scotland, UK, plan airport strikes Feb. 17-23; disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Unionized fire and rescue, security, and administration staff associated with Unite the Union and employed by Highland and Island Airports will observe strike action Feb. 17-23 in a dispute over wages.

The action will lead to disruptions at Dundee Airport (DND) on Feb. 17 and Feb. 20. Further disruptions will occur Feb. 20-23 at Barra Airport (BRR), Benbecula Airport (BEB), Campbeltown Airport (CAL), Inverness Airport (INV), Islay Airport (ILY), Kirkwall Airport (KOI), Stornoway Airport (SYY), Sumburgh Airport (LSI), and Tiree Airport (TRE). Other facilities operated by Highland and Island Airports are unaffected.

The extent of the disruptions is unclear. Unless averted, the strikes will likely result in disruptions to airport operations and flight schedules across affected islands. Flights will probably be canceled or delayed. Longer queues are likely for passenger processing procedures, particularly baggage check and reclaim. Disruptions could persist after strikes have officially concluded as the airport deals with any passenger backlogs.

Advice

Contact airlines if scheduled to fly from affected airports Feb. 17-23. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
