Event

A magnitude-5.0 earthquake occurred in southeastern Antofagasta Region in Chile around 08:39 March 26. The epicenter was about 114 km (70 miles) northeast of Diego de Almagro, Atacama Region. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 6 km (4 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout southern Antofagasta and northern Atamcama regions, as well as in western areas of Argentina's Salta and Catamarca provinces. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are possible over the coming days.
