Labor unions to hold protests in several locations across French Guiana March 23 to oppose pension reform.
Event
Labor unions, including the French Guiana Workers' Union (Union des Travailleurs Guyanais), have called for protests in the territory on March 23. The purpose of the demonstrations is to protest the recent pension system reform that increases the retirement age. Protesters plan to gather at the following locations and times on March 23:
Kourou: Townhall from 06:30
Matoury: Rond-Point Crique Fouillee from 05:00
Remire-Montjoly: Giratoire de Suzini from 05:00
Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni: Sous-Prefecture from 11:00
Demonstrators may also gather in other locations across the territory. Business and transport disruptions are likely. While most protests will probably remain peaceful, clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Allow additional transport time to reach destinations near rally venues. Reconfirm business appointments. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
