Germany: Unionized public transport workers striking in Bielefeld and Hanover March 14-15 /update 1

Unionized public transport workers striking in Bielefeld and Hanover, Germany, March 14-15. Travel delays and disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized public transport workers are striking in Bielefeld and Hanover on March 14. Striking transport workers in Bielfeld will resume work from around 04:00 March 15, while workers in Hanover will resume work from around 01:00 March 15. The United Services Union (Verdi) organized the industrial action following unsuccessful wage negotiations. In Bielefeld, tram and light rail services have been suspended, while only a few buses are operating in the city. In Hanover, buses, trains, and trams operated by the Ustra transport company are not operating, while Regiobus services are also experiencing disruptions.

Increased demand for alternative modes of transport is likely during the strike. Increased private vehicle use during the strike could prompt traffic congestion on major routes. Residual transport disruptions are possible after the work stoppage concludes as services normalize.

Advice

Reconfirm transport arrangements. Allow extra time to reach destinations during the strike period, and seek alternative means of transport as necessary. Plan for travel delays and increased congestion on transport services that are operating.
