Kenya: Authorities ban demonstrations in Nairobi due to 'security reasons' as of March 24

Authorities ban protests in Nairobi, Kenya, due to 'security reasons' as of March 24; political rallies remain possible over coming days.

Warning

Event

Police have reportedly banned all demonstrations in Nairobi due to "security reasons" as of March 24. Authorities did not immediately indicate how long the protest ban will remain in place. The ban comes amid plans by the opposition Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition Party (Azimio) to hold protests in the capital on March 27 and March 30, as well as on subsequent Mondays and Thursdays; it was not immediately clear if protest organizers will heed the demonstration ban.

Security forces will likely deploy in Nairobi to enforce the order. Clashes between activists and police are possible in the event that protest activity materializes. Transport disruptions are possible in areas subject to demonstrations and heightened security measures.

Context

Azimio has called for mass demonstrations in response to the government's failure to address the party's concerns in accordance with a 14-day ultimatum issued Feb. 22. As part of the ultimatum, activists demanded the resignation of President William Ruto and that authorities work to lower the cost of living, among other concessions. Supporters of Azimio leader Raila Odinga have held similar demonstrations in recent weeks.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent any protest-related disruptions. If violence breaks out, leave the area and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed the instructions of security officials.
