Warning

Event

Unions representing self-employed and freelance workers are continuing strike and protest across New Caledonia as of March 9 to denounce proposed changes to health insurance contributions. Roadblocks and sit-in protests are occurring, mainly in Noumea. Activists had earlier demonstrated outside various government buildings in Bourail, Le Foa, Noumea, and Poindimie March 8. Additional protests are likely in multiple areas including Lifou, Mare, and Ouvea. Popular rally venues include prominent government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Larger gatherings have previously attracted hundreds of participants, especially in Noumea.

Work stoppages may disrupt services such as in fuel stations, and impact business operations. Security personnel will likely monitor any demonstrations that materialize. Isolated skirmishes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions will continue, mainly at sites where protesters block or march on roadways.

Advice

Exercise caution near any demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near protest locations, especially in central Noumea. Plan for possible business disruptions due to strikes. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
