New Caledonia: Unionized workers plan territorywide demonstrations on March 8
Unionized workers to protest across New Caledonia on March 8. Increased security is likely; localized disruptions are possible.
Event
Unions representing self-employed and freelance workers plan to protest across New Caledonia from 09:00 March 8 to denounce proposed changes to health insurance contributions. Activists will gather from 03:00 at the Government of New Caledonia building in Noumea for a sit-in. Gatherings will also take place near the municipal police headquarters in Bourail, outside the North Province headquarters in Kone, at the City Hall in La Foa, and at an undisclosed location in Poindimie. Unannounced protests are likely in Lifou, Mare, and Ouvea. Popular rally venues include prominent government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Larger gatherings have previously attracted hundreds of participants, especially in Noumea.
Security personnel will likely monitor any demonstrations that materialize. Isolated skirmishes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are possible.
Advice
Exercise caution near any demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near protest locations, especially in central Noumea. Plan for possible business disruptions due to protest participation. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
