New Zealand: Unionized teachers plan to strike nationwide March 29

Unionized teachers call for strike across New Zealand March 29. Heightened security likely. Localized disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized teachers from the Post Primary Teachers' Association (PPTA) plan to strike across New Zealand March 29 to call for better pay and working conditions. This is the second strike following a previous one March 16 which involved around 50,000 teachers. However, participation in the upcoming strike may be lower as the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI Te Riu Roa), which represents 45,000 teachers, will not be taking part in the action. The strike could result in disruption to education services, including possible school closures. Increased absenteeism is possible among employees who are parents of school-aged children during the walkout.

Teachers could hold demonstrations as part of the strike March 29. Rallies could occur at schools, major government buildings, public squares, parks, and roadways in towns and cities. Protest turnout will vary by location; the highest attendance is likely in Auckland and Wellington. A few hundred people could participate in each gathering. Authorities will likely deploy to affected sites and monitor any demonstrations. Violence is unlikely, though protests could lead to localized traffic disruptions.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Plan for possible localized transport disruptions. Seek alternative routes to circumvent gathering locations. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
