Warning

Event

Opposition activists associated with the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) and the Yewwi Askan Wi (Liberate the People) coalition plan to demonstrate in Dakar March 14 and 16, with nationwide protests slated for March 15. The purpose of the actions is to demand the release of alleged political prisoners and show support for opposition activist Ousman Sonko. It remains unclear how many participants the gatherings may draw.

Organizers have announced the following event details:

  • 15:00 March 14: Rally to occur either at the Cultural Association for Social and Educational Advancement (ACAPTES) field or at the Khar Yalla field in Dakar;

  • March 15: Nationwide protests in all 46 departments; precise locations remain unclear;

  • March 16: PASTEF to protest in Dakar to support party leader Ousmane Sonko during his latest court hearing. Exact location has not been announced; however, the gathering will likely center on the courthouse complex (Palais de Justice).

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to any large gatherings that occur. Localized traffic disruptions are likely near demonstrations. Clashes between demonstrators and police are possible, especially if activists fail to heed orders to disperse. Acts of looting and vandalism cannot be ruled out. Protests may occur in major urban areas with little warning.

Advice

As a precaution, avoid any demonstrations that materialize. Plan for traffic disruptions and allow additional time to reach nearby destinations. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Monitor local media for updated information. Heed all official security and traffic advisories.
