CAR: Unionized river transport workers staging nationwide strike through at least May 4

Unionized river transport workers on strike nationwide in Central African Republic through at least May 4; fuel shortages possible.

Informational

Event

Employees of the Central African River Transport Company (SOCATRAF) are staging a strike through at least May 4. The purpose of the labor action is to demand payment of three months' wages owed to workers in arrieres, in addition to day transport bonuses, among other concessions. SOCATRAF's primary business activity is fuel transport.

Nationwide fuel shortages could result if the strike becomes protracted. Although labor leaders have announced no specific plans for such gatherings, striking workers could stage protests near facilities owned by SOCATRAF or other locations as part of their action. Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security for all strike-related protests. Transportation and business disruptions are possible.

Advice

Avoid all strike-related protests as a standard security precaution. Ensure fuel supplies for generators and fleet vehicles; confirm delivery agreements. If fuel shortages occur, do not buy fuel on the black market or from unauthorized dealers.
