Israel, PT: Tensions likely to remain high through at least mid-April after clashes near East Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque

Tensions likely to remain high through at least mid-April after clashes near East Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque. Increased security likely.

Warning

Event

Tensions will likely remain elevated at the Temple Mount/Al-Haram ash-Sharif compound in East Jerusalem through at least mid-April following clashes between Israeli security forces and worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque April 4-5. Security forces claim that they entered the compound following reports of rioting. Dozens of people have reportedly been injured.

Heightened security measures are almost certain in the vicinity of the Temple Mount/Al-Haram ash-Sharif compound in the coming days. Transport disruptions will probably affect areas of East Jerusalem around the flashpoint religious site. Further clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians are possible in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, particularly if Israeli security forces attempt to restrict access to the Temple Mount/Al-Haram ash-Sharif compound. Israeli authorities may also restrict Palestinian movement within the West Bank and East Jerusalem with little advance warning.

Advice

Avoid the Temple Mount/Al-Haram ash-Sharif area of East Jerusalem in the coming days. Exercise caution while operating in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Seek updated information on security conditions and possible movement restrictions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem before traveling. Heed the advice of local authorities. Avoid loitering near security checkpoints and main entrances to hotels, restaurants, or government buildings. Do not attempt to bypass security checkpoints without authorities' permission.
