Nurses affiliated with the New Zealand Nurses Organization plan to rally at multiple locations nationwide April 15 to call for better staffing, pay, and working conditions. Hundreds of nurses could participate in the action and hold related work stoppages. Organizers have called for demonstrations in the following cities:

  • Auckland: Nurses will gather at Myers Park from 10:30 before marching to Auckland Domain 11:00-14:00.

  • Christchurch: Participants will march from the Bridge of Remembrance to Victoria Square 11:00-13:00.

  • Dunedin: Nurses will gather at First Church of Otago before marching to the Octagon 11:00-13:00.

  • Nelson: Tahunanui Beach, behind Nightingale Memorial Library 11:00-13:00.

  • Wellington: Participants will march from Civic Square to the Parliament buildings 11:00-13:00.

Further information on rallies in other urban centers is available at the New Zealand Nurses Organization's website by clicking here.

Increased security measures are possible at rally sites. While the gatherings will most likely pass off peacefully, localized traffic disruptions are possible, especially if protesters occupy nearby roads. Organizers have not announced any work stoppages, but disruptions to medical services are possible during the action.

Advice

Confirm medical appointments as a precaution. Plan for service delays at affected locations; if possible, contact facilities in advance for information about wait times, which could vary. Exercise caution near any protests. Allow additional travel time near large rallies.
