Nigeria: Possible nationwide strike at airports in late April /update 1

Unions threaten to strike at airports across Nigeria in late April. Domestic flight disruptions are likely. Reconfirm all flights.

Warning

Event

Several aviation sector unions issued a seven-day ultimatum to officials on April 18; unions have threatened to initiate an indefinite strike at all airports if pay and working condition demands are not met. The unions had initially called on aviation employees to strike April 17-18 over similar demands. During the April 17-18 work stoppage, domestic flight disruptions were reported nationwide, including at Lagos Airport (LOS) and Abuja Airport (ABV). It is not clear when the most recent threatened strike will proceed.

Should the strike proceed, disruptions to domestic airport operations, inducing flight cancellations, are likely. Related protests in the vicinity of airport facilities are also possible. Participants obstructed access to airport facilities during the April 17-18 action, including at LOS and ABV. International flight disruptions cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Confirm all domestic and international flights in late April. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Arrive early at the airport to allow additional time for processing.
