Sudan: Foreign governments update advisories in response to ongoing armed conflict as of April 16

Foreign governments issue several advisories and recommendations to nationals in response to developments in Sudan as of April 16.

As of April 16, several foreign governments have updated travel advisories for Sudan in response to the ongoing armed conflict.

The French Embassy in Sudan continues to advise its nationals to remain indoors and away from windows and doors. The embassy has closed until further notice. The US Embassy in Sudan strongly advises all US citizens to continue to shelter in place until further notice. The US government has also noted that there are no plans for a US-coordinated evacuation of US nationals. The US government continues to advise US nationals not to travel to Sudan (since October 2022).

The UK government has updated its advice and now advises against all travel to Sudan. They also advise nationals in-country to remain indoors. The Canadian government now advises against all travel to Sudan and that nationals in-country should shelter in place. The Australian government advises its nationals to remain indoors. It has not adjusted its overall advisory of 'reconsider travel'. The Chinese Embassy in Sudan has advised its nationals to avoid leaving their residences.

In response to developments, advisories and recommendations are likely to be adjusted further in the coming weeks. Embassy operations may also be curtailed at times in response to security assessments. Further temporary closures may occur.

Advice

Shelter in place until the situation becomes clearer. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Persons planning to travel to Sudan should consider deferring travel until the situation becomes clearer.

Avoid concentrations of security personnel. Avoid all protests. Liaise with trusted contacts for further information. Reconfirm all flights if scheduled to fly to, from, or via Sudan in the coming days. Reconfirm the status of road routes before traveling. Travel with identification. Conserve battery power on essential equipment, such as mobile phones. Conserve basic supplies, including food and water.
