Canada: WestJet pilots to launch a nationwide strike starting May 19 /update 1

WestJet pilots plan to strike across Canada starting May 19. Networkwide flight disruptions likely. Reconfirm all flights.

Warning

Event

WestJet (WS) pilots represented by the Air Line Pilots Association International (ALPA) plan to launch a nationwide strike in Canada starting at 03:00 May 19, if ongoing contract negotiations fail. Union leaders have as yet given no indication of how long the industrial action may last, but have said if the strike materializes all WestJet operations could be disrupted.

Unless averted, the work stoppage will likely prompt significant flight delays and cancellations across WestJet's network; pilots employed by the carrier's subsidiary Swoop (WO) will probably also participate in the walkout. WestJet could announce preemptive flight cancellations and delays over the coming days. Flight disruptions will probably extend for several hours beyond the end of any strike as the company repositions aircraft and works through its passenger backlog.

Advice

Confirm all travel arrangements if booked to fly WestJet or any of its subsidiaries through at least May 22. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Arrive early at the airport to allow additional time for processing.
