Canada: WestJet pilots to launch a nationwide strike starting May 19 /update 2

WestJet pilots plan to strike across Canada starting May 19. Networkwide flight disruptions likely. Reconfirm all flights.

Warning

Event

WestJet (WS) pilots represented by the Air Line Pilots Association International (ALPA) plan to launch a nationwide strike in Canada starting at 03:00 May 19. Westjet and its subsidiary Swoop (WO) have canceled more than 100 flights as of May 18 in anticipation of the walkout; it remains unclear whether employees of the carrier's Sunwing (WG) subsidiary will also take part in the strike. Union leaders have as yet given no indication of how long the industrial action may last.

Unless averted, the work stoppage will continue to prompt significant flight delays and cancellations across WestJet's network. Flight disruptions will probably extend for several hours beyond the end of any strike as the company repositions aircraft and works through its passenger backlog.

Advice

Confirm all travel arrangements if booked to fly WestJet or any of its subsidiaries through at least May 22. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Arrive early at the airport to allow additional time for processing.
