A magnitude-5.0 earthquake occurred in southeastern Sichuan Province at around 10:15 May 4. The epicenter was about 87 km (54 miles) southeast of Yibin. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 38 km (23 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout western Chongqing and northwestern Guizhou, southeastern Sichuan, and far northeastern Yunnan provinces. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and significant damage is unlikely.
