Informational

Event

Meteorological authorities have warned that dust blowing over the island will likely present health concerns through at least June 4. Authorities have recorded unhealthy levels of dust particles smaller than PM10 blowing from northern Africa since early May 29, and have advised that residents close windows, that the young, elderly, or those with respiratory issues avoid going outdoors, and those working outdoors take protective measures.

In the event the dust worsens, business and transport disruptions may occur. Shipping and supply chain delays are possible, especially for time-sensitive deliveries. Air pollution could result in reduced visibility. Flight disruptions are possible at airports on the island.

People with certain underlying high-risk conditions - such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or heart and lung disease - could have adverse reactions to poor air conditions in affected areas.

Advice

Observe local air quality index reports. Plan for possible business and transport disruptions. Confirm flight reservations. Drive cautiously and allow extra time to reach destinations due to low visibility and road congestion. Individuals with respiratory conditions should have adequate medication on hand and consult with a physician. Revisit contingency plans, including telecommuting options, in the event of significant air pollution.
