Guinea: Additional protests and clashes possible in parts of Conakry through at least early May
Further demonstrations, clashes possible in several locations in Conakry, Guinea, through at least early May. Increased security likely.
Event
Additional demonstrations and clashes are possible in Conakry's Ratoma and Wanindara neighborhoods through at least early May. Police and youths have reportedly clashed for several days. Spontaneous protests have occurred with-little-to-no-warning in several locations, including the Route le Prince from the Cosa intersection and at the Bambeto and Hamdallaye traffic circles. Law enforcement reportedly deployed tear gas after protesters blocked roads near the Cosa Plaque Cellcom near Route le Prince between Hamdallaye and Wanindaron on May 2. The purpose of the protests remains unknown; however, they may be related to continued electricity supply disruptions and an alleged traffic incident involving a police vehicle and a pedestrian.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture in Conakry over the coming days. Localized ground travel disruptions are likely near any protest that may occur; further clashes between protesters and security forces are likely, especially if protesters ignore authorities' orders to disperse.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution and to mitigate likely ground travel delays. Plan for road travel delays in and near the protest areas. Heed instructions from the security forces. Clashes with security forces remain possible if protesters are overly disruptive and obstruct road traffic. If clashes erupt nearby, exit the area immediately; if unable to do so, take refuge in a secure non-governmental building.
