Guinea: Opposition group announces demonstrations in Conakry May 10-25

Opposition coalitions announces series of protests in Conakry, Guinea, May 10-25. Increased security and localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The Forces Vives of Guinea (FVG) opposition coalition group is planning a series of protests in the Greater Conakry area from May 10-25. Protests will take place on public roads May 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, and 25. The May 10 demonstration will start at the Tannerie roundabout and end at the People's Palace. On May 11, supporters plan to gather at the Cosa roundabout and march to the September 28 Stadium. The start times for the demonstrations have not been confirmed. Additional protests may occur outside of the Conakry area.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture in Conakry over the coming weeks. Localized ground travel disruptions are likely near any protest that may occur; further clashes between protesters and security forces are likely, especially if protesters ignore authorities' orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution and to mitigate likely ground travel delays. Plan for road travel delays in and near the protest areas. Heed instructions from the security forces. Clashes with security forces remain possible if protesters are overly disruptive and obstruct road traffic. If clashes erupt nearby, exit the area immediately; if unable to do so, take refuge in a secure non-governmental building.
