A magnitude-5.1 earthquake occurred southeast of Shizuoka Prefecture at around 16:42 May 22. The epicenter was about 42 km (26 miles) southeast of Shimoda. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout Kanto and southern Chubu regions. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely.
