Mexico: Authorities likely to maintain heightened presence in Frontera Comalapa, Chiapas, through early June

Authorities likely to maintain increased presence in Frontera Comalapa, Chiapas, Mexico, through early June. Further clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Security forces will likely maintain a heightened presence in Frontera Comalapa, Chiapas, through at least early June. The action is in response to clashes reported on May 27 between members of drug trafficking organizations (DTOs) known as the Sinaloa Cartel (Cartel de Sinaloa, CDS) and Jalisco New Generation Cartel (Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion, CJNG). More than 2,000 people have been displaced due to the violence. Authorities deployed on May 29 to secure the area, and the hostilities have largely de-escalated. However, further security operations and clashes involving DTOs are possible.

Transport and business disruptions are possible.

Frontera Comalapa is approximately 25 km (15 miles) north of the border with Guatemala and 160 km (100 miles) southeast of Tuxtla Gutierrez.

Context

Mexico has experienced heightened criminal violence in recent months; much of this involves the activities of DTOs. Large armed clashes may occur between rival DTOs or between individual DTOs and security forces; disruptions to highways and city streets are common in these clashes. DTOs also often carry out kidnappings and extortion.

Advice

Monitor local sources for current security conditions and operations. Ensure route security. Plan for possible transit disturbances. Avoid concentrations of security personnel. Strictly heed the orders of security personnel. If violence occurs, take shelter immediately in a secure, nongovernment building.
