Mexico: Canadian citizen killed in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca State, May 15

Event

According to local authorities, a 24-year-old Canadian tourist was shot and killed in the Colonia Arroyo Seco area of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca State, May 15. Police have released few details of the crime, saying only that the victim was found in his vehicle, where he had apparently been shot in the back. Investigators have made no statement as to a likely motive for the crime, nor have they announced any arrests.

Context

The killing comes three days after three Argentinian tourists were severely wounded, one mortally, in a machete attack in Villa Tutupepec, Oaxaca, which is approximately 83 km (52 miles) from Puerto Escondido. However, the suspect in the earlier attack was quickly apprehended, and it is very unlikely that the two incidents are related.
