Event

Unionized teachers, affiliated with the National Coordinators of Education Workers (CNTE) of Oaxaca, have launched a protest outside of the National Palace in downtown Mexico City early May 16. They are demanding a higher salary increase than the one announced recently by the national government and to speak directly with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Some of the demonstrators attempted to enter the palace forcefully and clashed with security officers. Following the skirmish, a small delegation was allowed to enter and meet with authorities.

Hundreds of activists will remain in the area for the coming hours, likely causing associated transport and business disruptions. Further clashes cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the area around the National Palace for the coming hours. Heed instructions from authorities.
