Mexico: Student activists plan to march in downtown Oaxaca May 25

Student activists to march in Oaxaca, Oaxaca State, Mexico, May 25; heightened security and disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Members of the Student Coordinator of Normalistas of the State of Oaxaca (CENEO) are preparing to protest in Oaxaca on May 25. Participants will gather at the Fuente de las Ocho Regiones at 09:00 before marching to the Zocalo (Plaza de la Constitucion). Participants are demanding the release of several of their members in addition to several education-related issues.

Although the action should remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence nearby as a precaution. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid the march as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the march route. Seek alternate routes to circumvent related transport disruptions. Do not attempt to cross any roadblocks set up by protesters; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
