Nigeria: Increased security likely during presidential inauguration ceremony in Abuja May 29

Officials to implement heightened security measures during presidential swearing-in ceremony in Abuja May 29.

Informational

Event

Officials will implement tight security measures ahead of and during the inauguration of the new president-elect Bola Tinubu in Abuja on May 29. The swearing-in ceremony will occur at Eagle Square, where thousands, including foreign leaders and dignitaries, are expected to attend. Other ceremonies will take place in each state capital as many new governors will be sworn in on the same day.

Security measures such as roadblocks and identity checks, as well as large crowds, will most certainly cause traffic and business disruptions across the city, particularly around Eagle Square. Traffic to and from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (ABV) may be obstructed as security forces close roads temporarily to prioritize official motorcade movements as several foreign officials plan to attend the inauguration. Protests denouncing Tinubu’s victory remain possible. Security forces will likely forcibly disperse such gatherings.

Advice

Avoid inauguration-related events to minimize potential disruptions ahead of and on May 29. Keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. Heed all instructions from local authorities and allow additional time to reach destinations near locations where demonstrations or other gatherings may take place.
