Tight security certain near Islamabad High Court, Pakistan, May 12, due to high-profile case and related rally. Clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Officilas have heightened security around the Islamabad High Court, May 12, for the appearance of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Khan will complete bail formalities regarding a corruption case around 11:00, before addressing a rally at the G-13 section of the Srinagar Highway. A nationwide suspension of mobile internet services since May 9 after violence broke out over Khan's detention continues. Section 144 remains active across Islamabad; the rules ban unauthorized public gatherings of more than four people, the carrying and use of firearms in public, among others. PTI supporters are likely to defy any such restrictions to attend and/or hold solidarity rallies. Violence may quickly break out, mainly if police attempt to prevent PTI supporters from gathering.

Traffic restrictions, including road closures and diversions are likely in the vicinity of the affected buildings, sensitive areas like the Red Zone, as well as entry points to Islamabad. Additional measures, such as vehicular and pedestrian checks, are possible. Activists may hold violent and disruptive protests if Khan faces additional arrests in other cases; popular protest venues include public parks, government buildings like the parliament, and major roadways. Clashes and/or tight security measures may prompt further localized transport and/or business disruptions.

Advice

Avoid any protests or navigating protester roadblocks due to possible violence. Exercise caution if operating in or near any court premises in Islamabad. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan for possible localized business and transport disruptions. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks. Monitor trusted local media for protest plans, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
