Peru: Protesters to gather in Lima's Plaza San Martin May 6

Protesters to gather at 15:00 May 6 in the Plaza San Martin in Lima, Peru. Localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Protesters will gather in the Plaza San Martin in central Lima beginning 15:00 May 6 to support a foreign national expulsion bill for those who the organizers allege have committed crimes. Though the demonstration is likely to be mostly peaceful, police will probably deploy to monitor the protest. Localized transport and business disruptions near the Plaza San Martin are likely. Clashes between protesters and counter-protesters cannot be entirely ruled out, especially if demonstrators are allowed to come into contact with pro-immigration groups or groups of migrants who oppose the demonstration.

Context

The protest is being organized by members of Congress and a famous Peruvian comic and comes as tensions related to immigration are particularly high, with many Venezuelan migrants gathered along Peru's border with Chile.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a building. Allow for additional transport time in central Lima May 6. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
