Senegal: Political activists plan to demonstrate in Dakar from 15:00 May 12

Activists plan to demonstrate in Dakar, Senegal, beginning 15:00 May 12. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Activists associated with the Movement of the Living Forces of the Nation (F24) have called for demonstrations at Place de la Nation (Place de l’Obelisque) and in Parcelles Assainies in Dakar starting at 15:00 May 12. The protests aim to denounce the third candidacy of President Macky Sall and demand the release of alleged political prisoners, among other issues. Opposition activist Ousmane Sonko, head of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) party, has endorsed the F24 movement and called upon his supporters to mobilize in solidarity. The gatherings may draw hundreds of participants.

Heightened security, as well as localized business and transport disruptions, are likely near the demonstrations. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, especially if activists fail to heed orders to disperse. Demonstrators may stage spontaneous gatherings with little notice before the scheduled time in Dakar. Protests may also occur in other major urban areas with little warning.

Advice

Avoid demonstrations due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport disruptions and allow additional time to reach nearby destinations. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Monitor local media for updated information. Heed all official security and traffic advisories.
