Protests likely across South Korea May 10 to mark the first anniversary of President Yoon Suk Yeol's inauguration. Disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Anti-government protests are likely nationwide May 10 to mark the first anniversary of President Yoon Suk Yeol's inauguration. Activists have called for candlelight vigils at various locations in the capital Seoul, including Hyochang Park Subway Station, on the evening of May 10. Separately, protesters plan to gather at Sangnam Fountain Square in Changwon City from 18:30.

Additional gatherings are possible at popular gathering locations in Seoul, such as the Constitutional Court, Gwanghwamun Square, National Assembly, Seoul City Hall, and Seoul Plaza, as well as prominent public squares, parks, government buildings, and thoroughfares in other major cities. Hundreds to thousands of people could participate in related events.

Police will likely deploy officers to monitor protests. Localized transport disruptions are probable near protest sites, especially if activists block and/or march along roadways; roadblocks are possible if significant rallies occur. Localized business disruptions could occur near gathering venues. While violence is unlikely, isolated skirmishes may occur between police and activists as well as between rival groups of demonstrators, especially if rally participants attempt to gather in unauthorized areas or breach security cordons.

Advice

Avoid the protests due to possible skirmishes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near the gathering sites.
