Event

International health officials have declared an outbreak of hepatitis E virus in the city of Wau, Western Bahr el-Ghazal state, with more than 90 total cases (35 confirmed) reported as of April 13. The majority of cases (93 percent) have been reported in Nazareth Village. South Sudan’s Ministry of Health and the WHO have deployed a rapid response team to determine the extent of the outbreak, and to implement preventative measures to reduce further disease transmission. This report represents the most complete data available as of May 8.

Context

Hepatitis E is transmitted directly through food or water contaminated with fecal material from an infected person. Symptoms typically develop 2-9 weeks after exposure. Symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, joint pain, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). Most infected individuals recover on their own, but some may require hospitalization in cases of severe illness.
