Unionized workers from the Inter-union Plenary of Workers – National Convention of Workers (Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores – Convencion Nacional de Trabajadores, PIT-CNT) are planning a demonstration in central Montevideo May 24 to press the government to reduce taxes on water access. The protest occurs in the midst of water shortages due to a severe drought in Uruguay. The activists plan to rally at 17:30 at 18 of July Avenue and Ejido Street and march to 18 of July Avenue and Andes Street. The demonstration will likely rally at Plaza Independencia after the march.

Demonstrations are possible in other locations, particularly near government buildings, on May 24. Heightened security is likely near protest sites, as are business and localized transit disruptions.
