Uruguay: Public sector union to hold nationwide strike and protest in Montevideo May 8

Public sector union to stage nationwide strike in Uruguay and hold protest march in Montevideo May 8.

Informational

Event

Members of the Union of Social Development Workers (Union de Trabajadores de Desarrollo Social, UTMIDES), representing employees of the Ministry of Social Development, will hold a nationwide strike 09:00-13:00 May 8. As part of the strike, UTMIDES members in Montevideo will gather at the Ministry of Social Development building at 1453 Avenida 18 de Julio at 09:00. From there they will march to the National Directorate of Labor building located at 737 Calle 25 de Mayo. Although the union has not announced protest sites in other cities, small demonstrations are possible at government buildings outside of Montevideo.

Though the protests will almost certainly be peaceful, police may deploy to demonstration sites to monitor the labor action. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely in the immediate vicinity of demonstration sites and march routes.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow for additional transport time near protest sites. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
