Cambodia: Additional security deployment affecting Kratie, Mondulkiri, Ratanakiri, and Thbong Khmum provinces as of June 28 /update 1

Cambodia further increasing security in Kratie, Mondulkiri, Ratanakiri, and Thbong Khmum provinces as of June 28.

Informational

Event

Cambodian authorities are further intensifying security measures in the Kratie, Mondulkiri, Ratanakiri, and Thbong Khmum provinces as of June 28. Officials have deployed at least 500 troops and air defense weapons in response to recent drone incursions into Ratanakiri Province. The Cambodian prime minister has alleged the drones are linked to a Vietnamese armed group held responsible for the June 11 attacks in Vietnam's Cu Kuin District, Dak Lak Province. The attack targeted two police stations, killing nine people, including police officers, local officials, and civilians. Vietnamese authorities have apprehended 84 suspects in the case.

Tight security is likely in the area over the coming weeks, including at border checkpoints with Vietnam. Probable security measures include checkpoints, additional patrols, identity checks, and vehicle searches. Enhanced checks at land border crossings could increase passenger processing times. Clashes between militants and security forces are possible.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in the affected provinces. Avoid concentrations of security personnel and people due to the potential for violence. Reconfirm the status of border crossings and land routes near the Cambodia-Vietnam border before travel. Heed all instructions of local officials.
