Cameroon: Health personnel strike ongoing nationwide as of June 2 /update 1

Health personnel strike ongoing in Cameroon as of June 2. Related gatherings reported in Yaounde.

Informational

Event

As of June 2, public health personnel across Cameroon are striking from 07:30-12:30 daily to demand improved working conditions and salaries for temporary employees, among other demands. Since the work stoppage began on May 22, participants have gathered in several areas of Yaounde, including in front of the emergency center of Yaounde (Centre des Urgences Yaounde, CURY), the Regional Delegation of the Ministry of Public Health, and the Health Ministry. Gatherings passed off peacefully. It is unclear whether the action has impacted medical services. The strike is taking place amid a Cholera outbreak affecting most of the country that left more than 400 individuals dead.

Related gatherings may persist near CURY, as well as near the Health Ministry and other government buildings in the capital and other health-related facilities nationwide in the coming days. Localized road travel delays are possible near protest areas.

Advice

Confirm all medical appointments until the strike concludes. Avoid all protests.
