Possible flooding forecast across parts of Valparaiso Region, Chile, through at least June 24. Evacuations ongoing in Los Andes Province.

Warning

Event

The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED) have ordered the preventative evacuation of several communities in Los Andes Province, Valparaiso Region, due to possible flooding in the region as of early June 23. The affected communities include Riecillo, Rio Blanco, Villas Aconcagua, Santa Ana, Puntilla del Viento, Las Vizcachas, El Algarrobo, El Sauce, and Bocatoma in Los Andes Commune and Las Vizcachas, Los Chacayes Bajo and Rio Colorado in San Esteban Commune. The affected communities lie along the Aconcagua, Blanco, and Juncal rivers, and authorities have warned that these rivers could overflow amid heavy rainfall in the region over the coming hours and days. Meteo Chile has issued yellow rainfall and thunderstorm warnings across the region as of early June 23. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change. Transport disruptions are also possible along Route 60 as sections of the road run parallel to the Aconcagua and Juncal rivers, as well as on other minor roads in the region.

Hazardous Conditions
Sustained rainfall could trigger flash and areal flooding. Such flooding is possible in low-lying communities near watercourses and other large bodies of water and in urban areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream of large reservoirs may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall.

Transport
The severe weather will likely contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage.

Advice

Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Seek updated information on weather and road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast. Plan accordingly for potential delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
