Cyprus: LGBTQ rights activists to stage Pride events in Nicosia from 18:00 June 17

LGBTQ rights activists plan to hold Pride events in Nicosia June 17. The scheduled events, collectively billed as "United by Pride," include simultaneous marches on both sides of the Green Line (UN Buffer Zone) as well as various festivities. Activists will march from Eleftheria Square and Kugulu Park beginning at 18:00 and meet at the Home for Cooperation in the Ledra Palace area of the Green Line at 19:00. Pride-related performances are scheduled to continue in the area until 23:00.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near the march routes amid the demonstrations; authorities will also likely maintain an increased security presence around the Pride-related festivities slated for later in the evening. While the events are likely to pass off peacefully, isolated clashes between Pride demonstrators and police, or between Pride demonstrators and counterdemonstrators, cannot be ruled out.
