Honduras: Curfew to be modified in Choloma, implemented in San Pedro Sula, starting July 4 /update 1
Authorities to impose a 5-hour nightly curfew in San Pedro Sula and Choloma, Honduras, starting July 4.
Event
Officials have ordered a 23:00-04:00 curfew in San Pedro Sula and Choloma, located north of San Pedro Sula, starting July 4. The measure represents a two-hour reduction from the curfew in place in Choloma between June 25-July 3, and it follows a mass shooting at a billiard hall in the town's Victoria area on June 24, which left 13 people dead. The curfew will run until July 10, but authorities may extend it. Additional security, including checkpoints, will be established in the affected areas.
Additional security patrols and raids are likely as authorities seek to reduce the threat posed by organized crime groups and reestablish order. Security measures are likely to result in ground travel and business operation disruptions. Further acts of violence will likely trigger additional measures or extensions of current regulations.
Context
This is the latest measure to combat crime in the country. President Xiomara Castro previously declared a nationwide state of emergency in response to the activity of several large criminal organizations, particularly the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18 (18th Street Gang, Calle 18, Mara 18, La 18) gangs. Further measures are likely in response to incidents and security assessments.
Advice
Exercise caution when operating in the country. Heed all official advisories. Travel during the day and with identification. Avoid travel during curfew hours and at night.
