Mexico: Activists plan nationwide demonstrations June 8 /update 1

Activist groups to protest across Mexico, June 8. Heightened security, transport and business disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Several activist groups plan to demonstrate nationwide on June 8. The purpose of the action is to demand an end to alleged attacks against members of the Zapatista movement in the Chiapas State. Demonstrators based in Mexico City will gather from 16:00 at the Angel de la Independencia before marching to the Zocalo. Organizers have so far confirmed that activists in Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chiapas, Nuevo Leon, Michoacan, Guanajuato, Queretaro, Veracruz, and Yucatan will join the action. Start times and locations for the events in other urban centers remain unclear. Participation may vary depending on location, but several hundred people are likely to participate in the gatherings.

Demonstrations will likely cause transport and business disruptions. Although the events are likely to remain peaceful, authorities will probably deploy an increased security presence as a precaution near any related protests. Isolated clashes cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating near impacted areas. Seek alternate routes to circumvent any related transport disruptions. Leave the area at the sign of any security disturbances that may materialize. Heed the instructions of authorities.
