Critical

Event

Moldovan Ministry of Internal Affairs confirms that a suspect has been arrested following a shooting at Chisinau International Airport (KIV) that left two people dead on June 30; the casualties include a border guard and an airport security officer. The airport remains evacuated; however, authorities are working to normalize the situation in the area. Flights to and from KIV have been grounded. Officials state that a foreign traveler, suspected of being a Russian national, opened fire while being escorted to a sterile area after border authorities denied the individual entry. It is unclear how the suspect obtained the firearm; however, reports indicate that a pistol was stolen from a border guard. Security forces are deployed to KIV, and officials have launched an investigation into the incident.

Heightened security is almost certain around the airport in the coming hours. Disruptions to flights, including delays and cancellations, are likely through at least June 30.

Advice

Avoid the site until the situation becomes clearer. Adhere to instructions from officials. Reconfirm all flights if traveling via KIV through at least early July 1.
