Further violence possible following recent attacks in Mangu LGA, Plateau State, Nigeria, as of June 21.

Warning

Event

Further violence is possible in the Mangu Local Government Area (LGA), Plateau State, despite a 24-hour curfew implemented on June 18, following recent attacks on various communities. The last attack occurred around 23:00 June 20, when suspected Fulani herders stormed two communities, killing at least 14 civilians. It is unclear whether the curfew remains in place; all vehicle movement is restricted under the measure.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence in the impacted area. The curfew and movement restrictions will prompt localized transport and business disruptions. Officials may extend the curfew or implement additional security measures at short notice.

Context

Similar curfews have previously been imposed in parts of Mangu, including in May after assailants killed at least 38 people. The governor announced on June 19 that about 150 people died within three weeks in Mangu. The exact reason for the attacks is unclear. Disputes over access to resources, land rights issues, and related communal tensions are frequent in the middle belt and have likely prompted violence. Communal violence often fuels rounds of reprisal attacks between various communities leading to heavy casualty tolls.

Advice

Consider deferring nonessential travel to the Mangu LGA until the situation calms. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Do not discuss plans and routes publicly. If operating in the area over the long term, vary routes and travel times and ensure secure transport. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
